The challenge

Most irrigation decisions are still made without data.

Water is applied on schedule and experience rather than on what the crop actually needs that day. The result is difficult to see from the surface, and it accumulates over a season.

Without a continuous reading of field conditions, it is difficult to know whether a parcel received too much water or not enough.

Stress that appears too late

By the time water stress is visible on the plant, part of the season's quality and yield potential has usually already been affected.

Inputs lost below the root zone

Excess irrigation carries nutrients past the roots, which raises input costs and puts pressure on the surrounding water resource.

Buyers and certification schemes increasingly ask growers to document how water is managed, which is hard to do without a continuous record.
